“People united for traveling solo without fear”

I headed off solo to the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on the Mall in Washington, DC, yesterday. The plan was to meet my niece downtown. Not to get stuck waiting, futilely, for a train I could squeeze onto to get downtown.

Instead, our little platform at the Van Ness Metro station on the red line became an impromptu gathering for the hordes of people who had to let packed train after packed train go by. Which is when I decided that going to rallies is a perfectly enjoyable situation for solo travelers (if I'd happened to be from out of town.)

While I waited, I chatted with and got a photo of a mother and her tiger-costumed baby; a couple with their 7-year-old holding her mother's sign saying, "I have Republican friends. They're not all insane;" a young guy in the platform throng with a sign saying, "I hate crowds;" a space alien of some sort; an older woman who was attempting to meet a friend on the Mall; and several others.

I happened to run into a friend on the platform so was no longer solo for my rally attendance. But it would have been a fun event either way. There was so much to look at. I couldn't hear the guest stars, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, described by The Washington Post as "the founding fathers of fake news."

Solo travelers get tour guide and photography lessons in Annapolis and Washington, DC

"Learn to take great pictures while touring DC's favorite locations." What a cool concept for solo travelers from out of town.

Lynford Morton of PhotoTour Excursions offers two, two, two events in one. (okay, only the older among us will remember that chewing gum commercial. Or was it mints?) Photo lessons and a tour of the area at the same time.

You meet up either at the Lincoln Memorial for DC monuments or in Annapolis (think Chesapeake Bay, U.S. Naval Academy, boats) or in Adams Morgan, a neighborhood in DC full of ethnic restaurants and funky buildings.

Then you get to hang with locals and visitors who show up for the class and talk photography, where you're from and anything else that comes up during your wanderings. So it's fine to go solo.

I chose the Adams Morgan class. Eight of us met on a sunny Sunday morning. Most had pretty nice cameras but didn't know much about them. Two had point and shoots.

The best part of the tour was that Lyn gave personal attention to each of us, looking at our photos and showing us how to use various settings.

Solo travelers can try falconry in Hershey, Pennsylvania

Falconry, the "sport of kings," is actually the sport of hunting. Instead of using a gun, or a bow and arrow, hunters go into the wild with a raptor that catches small game. Rabbits. Squirrels. Other small, edible animals.

In Hershey, Pennsylvania, you can do falconry, but without the bloodletting. Basically, you watch a demonstration with fake prey and you get to call to a Harris' hawk and watch it swoop in on you and land gently on your hand. Sans small animal in beak.

This next video shows that even a young 'un can participate, although the minimum age is 8. That's Darius Robinson with falconer Jack Hubley.

Last time I was at Hershey, a substitute falconer ran the program. He did just fine. But he didn't do the final act that Jack Hubley, the regular falconer did. Which was to have a hawk fly between two lines of people.

Probably because there weren't enough people that first time I went. There were only a handful of us. This time, I was in a group of 11.

Hubley told us that hawks can squeeze themselves tight temporarily, wings to body, to get through crevasses and other small spots to reach their prey. We got a small taste of that as the hawk flew through our lines and brushed us with his wings.

(Falconry is a nice solo travel experience for social people because you will be with other people oohing and aahing together. Hm. "Social solos?" Have I coined a phrase?)

10 reasons to visit Iceland and why it’s perfectly fine going alone

Bootsnall, a great travel site, recently published a post on 10 reasons to visit Iceland now. The photos are gorgeous and I agree with all their reasons. Except maybe #10. I'll get to that in a moment.

I've been to Iceland twice (as I've written here before), once in the winter and once in the summer. Many friends have been there over and over. One for business. He loves it. Another couple because it's so close. And they love it.

7 solo travel lessons plus 7 tips for solo travel with one bag

Today's thoughts on solo travel come from The Travel Belles and the Wise Bread website.

The Travel Belles post on 7 solo travel lessons is filled with luscious photos of the Loire Valley in France that I've borrowed (with permission) to use here. I practically cry, wondering how I could get my photos to look as stunning.

Her tips are good too. For instance: "Always leave room for a change of plans. They are going to happen anyway."

So true. Everyone had told the writer she needed to get to the Chateau de Chenonceau first thing in the morning. As soon as it opened.

She made plans to do so. But her innkeeper told her it wasn't necessary and that she should relax and take her time and go to the chateau at lunch when everyone was outside in the garden.

That she should visit the local market in the morning instead. It turned out to be a worthwhile change of plans. Would a travel partner have tried to talk her out of it? Would she have caved if she weren't solo? See other tips, and especially, more photos, at The Travel Belles blog.

As for tips for single-bag travel, many of the tips are common but it's worth a read to be sure you know them all.

The writer's reasons for why to take only carry on luggage had me nodding my head in agreement.

"No more long lines to check bags, no more wondering if your luggage will get lost along the way, no more waiting in line at baggage-claim areas, no more keeping track of large bags and small bags and no more fees."

Amen to that. I've had bags not show up. For days. At least twice while on vacations and once while on a business trip. One bag was lost for all time.

I used to check bags because it was easier than lugging my stuff through airports. The point is, then, to take less stuff. I get better and better at it. So can you.

So pack well and pack small. Save a lot of aggravation both coming, going and when the credit card bill comes. And the baggage fees are missing.

Posts on solo travel in Egypt win award from travel writers group

We here at Boldly Go Solo (we being me) are just bursting with delight over learning that this very blog was awarded top honors by the Society of American Travel Writers' Atlantic Caribbean Chapter.

On a related note, I just learned about a new book called Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It.
Unfortunately, I haven't read it yet. So if I'm bragging and blowing it, I apologize. I'll get the hang of it as soon as I get the book.

The posts that captured the hearts of the judges, in case you'd like to reread them were on taking a carriage rider in Luxor, Egypt, ballooning over the Valley of the Kings and falconry at Hershey in Pennsylvania.

The judges, comprised of journalism faculty at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, noted:

"Excellent scene-setting makes these posts stand out.
Great theme for a blog."

Paradores for solo travelers in Andalusia, Galicia and other Spanish cities

I'd heard about paradores, but had never been clear how they'd fit into the solo traveler's world. So after hearing from Holly Maguire of escapio, I offer the following Q & A.

What exactly is a parador?

Traditionally, a parador would be a place to stop off for the night on major traveling routes. The Spanish Paradores
concept had rescued historic buildings from deterioration by selecting
monasteries, palaces and churches across Spain and giving them a modern
makeover.

This makes
for unique historic hotels, with all the modern comforts and
usually with excellent views of a city or a beautiful landscape.

Why should a solo traveler choose a parador over some other type of lodging?

Solo travelers
would get much closer to true Spanish hospitality and history by
selecting a parador over a beach resort or classic city hotel.

Anyone
looking to discover typical regional cuisine will also be delighted, as
there are tasting classes and cooking courses at many of the paradores. These are a great way to spend an evening getting to know fellow travelers.

Is London safe for solo travelers?

"Is London an extremely dangerous place to travel alone?" This was the question posed by a "young woman traveling alone" on a site called English Travel Deals.

If you'd been in the room with me you might have seen my eyes roll. And a smile appear. What kind of question is that? If you go to London and nothing happens to you, you will feel like you are in a safe city.

If you go and get pick-pocketed, you will forever think it's the Wild West of Europe.

But to tag a whole Western city dangerous? It doesn't make sense. Is Los Angeles dangerous? Is Dallas dangerous? Is Oklahoma City dangerous? Definitely at certain times and in some places. Particularly when terrorists strike, which they have in many tourist destinations such as London and Madrid.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not on solo travel. Walk the Amazon anyone?

Some solo travel is a tad more difficult than I’d care to do. For instance, a British ex-Army officer is in the midst of walking the length of the Amazon River in South America.

That’s, um, 4,000 miles. As the crocodile swims. But longer, really, since the river widens in many places and Ed Stafford can’t always take the shortest route. By February, Stafford had passed the halfway point.

He’s accompanied by a guide named Cho, so though he started out solo in April 2008, he now has someone along on the trip.

When I set out solo, I usually go to some cushy place with all the amenities. And often meet up with a guide, too. Stafford, on the other hand, has had to deal with venomous snakes, flooding, electric eels, piranhas and jaguars.

Cairo Time takes you to the Nile and the Pyramids and the Khan El-Khalili market

"Cairo Time," a romantic drama on the big screen that takes viewers on an in-depth tour of Egypt's capital city, provided me with an evocative return visit to the "City of a Thousand Minarets."

I recognized a set of stairs in a section of the Khan El-Khalili market downtown, a minaret (or is it just a tower?) on the banks of the Nile and, of course, the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.

For the friend who joined me, it was a glimpse of Cairo so compelling that he now wants to visit.

This is one of the things I love about travel. It adds a richness to life that extends far beyond the trip.

The movie is beautifully shot, but slow. I like this description of Cairo Time from the Toronto Star: "Ruba Nadda’s slow burner shows the hectic urbanity of Cairo but also the cool eternity of the ancient pharaohs and the hidden chambers of the heart."
